Fair Labor and Practice Act (STATEWIDE)
WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
The only workers in New York State that are left unprotected (no labor rights) with no opportunity to unionize are our farm workers. At large this debate is rooted back to its existence when recently freed black slaves were looking for work. Farm owners barred against farmers' fair wages, stood against farmers unionizing, and to this day still do not have adequate housing (poor living conditions), accessible bathrooms, clean water, protection gear against pesticides, a day of rest, among others. Today farmers were almost NOT included in the Fight For 15 until advocacy was made, still exempt from the raise, but included in the initial raise to $11. On top of this, immigrant women and girls, especially indigenous, are more likely to be exploited due to fear of retaliation and deportation. Legislation has been stuck in committees for more than 80 years!

WHAT SEPA MUJER DID?
SEPA Mujer has been part of the campaign for the past 6 years actively organizing with our members and our partners at Rural Migrant Ministry in various actions, rallies, marches, press conferences, speaking engagements, and other actions the campaign needed to move on Long Island. Some key actions was our participation in the mobilization from Riverhead to Albany, collecting over 300 petitions, and mobilizing members and stakeholders in Albany and on Long Island.
What’s going on now and what’s next?
Legislation has a brighter future now with the New York State Democratic majority in the Senate and Assembly! But we still need more commitments, if you’d like to take action call your Long Island Senator and ask them to protect Long Island farm workers today!
