Clarice Murphy has joined the team at SEPA Mujer in September 2019 after working collaboratively with Executive Director Martha Maffei through a legal assistance to victims project and in writing grants for SEPA Mujer on a contractual basis. Through these experiences, Clarice has learned of the powerful advocacy SEPA members engage in on behalf of their sisters and the challenges faced by the Latina community. Coming to SEPA combines Clarice’s commitment to, and love of, social justice work, with grant writing/management, and help for victims of gender-based violence, which she sees as a perfect combination. Clarice serves both as Program Director of SEPA Mujer’s new Victim Assistance Program ( 24 hour /7 day per week hotline, immigration case relief, case manager services and a sexual assault survivors support group for victims of gender-based violence, hate crimes, and wage theft) and as Grant Administrator.
Clarice comes to SEPA Mujer with over 36 years of working within the domestic violence and sexual assault movements in both administrative and direct service capacities in her work at Town of Babylon Beacon Family Wellness Center (2017-present), Mercy Center Ministries (2016-2018) and Victims Information Bureau of Suffolk (1987-2015.). Through grant-writing and project oversight, Clarice has been a leader in bringing innovative collaborative programming to Suffolk County, including creation of domestic violence protocols for Children’s Protective Services and Adult Protective services, legal assistance to immigrant Latina abuse victims (with SEPA Mujer), policy and service development for victims of domestic violence or sexual assault for who have disabilities (with United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Suffolk), services for runaway, homeless, pregnant and parenting youth, who have experienced dating violence or sexual assault (with Mercy Center Ministries), and services for children who have witnessed domestic violence (with Long Island Head Start) Clarice has extensive experience in providing trauma informed counseling to victims of gender-based violence, as well as facilitating counseling intervention groups for domestic violence offenders. Clarice’s service to the County has included co-chairing several sub-committees on the County Executive’s Task Force to Prevent Family Violence.
Clarice has a Master of Science degree in Psychology from California State University at Los Angeles, and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from (then) State University of New York at Stony Brook. She has recently completed all required course work for credentialing as Certified Alcoholism Substance Abuse Counselor and is pending certification as a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional.
